The FISU World University Games came to an end on Sunday, where South Africa closed off the tournament with nineteen (19) medals making them the only African country to break the Top 10 on the medal standings.
The final day would see two sporting codes in action, athletics and rowing with both securing medals for South Africa. First up were rowing duo, Katherine Williams and Courtney Westley who grabbed silver in the women’s pair at a time of 7:43.97 narrowly missing out against Lithuania.
South Africa would add another medal on the track in the men’s 4x100m relay. The quartet of Kyle Zinn, Retshidisitswe Mlenga, Mthi Mthimkulu and Bayanda Walaza finished in a season best time of 38.80 running away with silver.
The bulk of Team South Africa’s medals came from the swimming and athletics codes; here is a breakdown of the rest of the medal winners who shone in Rhine−Ruhr.
A gold medal was won by Lythe Pillay who stole the show in the men’s 400m, winning the race in a time of 44.84. Bayanda Walaza claimed bragging rights in the 100m earlier in the week and then added another gold medal in the 200m (20.63), crowing him the king of sprints at the Games.
In the 4x400m Mixed Relay, Mthi Mthimkulu, Precious Molepo, Lythe Pillay and Marlie Viljoen snatched the silver medal in a solid time of 3:16.42.
Aiden Smith would add another gold in the men’s shotput with a distance of 20.25m while Jana van Schalkwyk won bronze in the women’s javelin throw in a distance of 56.73m having previously won bronze at Chengdu in 2023.
South Africa ends their campaign in Germany with six (6) gold, five (5) silver and eight (8) bronze medals capping off an extraordinary Games for the team in green and gold finishing 7th overall on the medal table.
