Pienaar grabs silver at World UniSquash Champs

South Africa and University of Johannesburg’s (UJ)squash player, Alexa Pienaar grabbed silver at the World University Squash Championships in Birmingham, England where she produced one of the country’s best performances by reaching the final.

“It feels fantastic winning the silver medal, I am a little sad it’s not gold but I am happy I exceeded my goals for the tournament.Reaching the final in a world event of this caliber is one of my biggest achievements,” said the 24-year-old.

Pienaar started her squash career in the Western Cape when she was still very young. She admits she enjoyed it very much and continued getting better as the years passed.

Having participated in the last World Squash Championship in Malaysia in 2016, Pienaar used this experience to overcome top seed Grace Gear from England in the earlier round of this year’s tournament.

She then had to face another Brit, Lily Taylor in the finals. Pienaar went down straight sets to Taylor but acknowledged that it had been a good learning curve for the future. Having mentioned 10-time world number one Nicole David as her squash inspiration, the best is yet to come from Pienaar’s budding career.

“Moving forward I’d like to go on the PSA tour and compete with other internationally recognized squash players. I would like to participate in international tournaments and build on a world ranking now that I know more or less where I stand in terms of international standards,” she concluded.
