International Events

OVERVIEW

All international tours, to and from South Africa, involving a member of University Sport South Africa (USSA), fall under the jurisdiction of USSA. The general arrangements for tours are subject to the approval of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of USSA.

Permission to tour shall be obtained at least three (3) months in advance from the National Sports Federation concerned as well as from the NEC of USSA. The NEC may in exceptional circumstances consider well motivated written applications that are received on shorter notice. Applications received after the closing date set by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) or Organising Committees of World University Championship events, will not be considered.

Applications and/or motivations to tour must include the following:

  1. detailed progress report on the development programme for that specific sport;
  2. copy of the invitation to tour;
  3. general arrangements and programme of the tour;
  4. details on travel and accommodation arrangements;
  5. detailed report on the trials, and team selection process (e.g. dates, venues, number of participants, number of teams, selection criteria);
  6. names of team members, their institutions, student numbers, course of study and RSA passport numbers;
  7. name of team manager, occupation and institution;
  8. name(s) of coaching staff, occupation and institution;
  9. indication of the standard of team (e.g. national and international ranking);
  10. necessary guarantees of sufficient funds (i.e. financial resources versus detailed budget).

USSA in association with SASCOC, shall be responsible for high performance multi-coded international events, i.e. FISU Universiades, FASU and the CUCSA Games.  USSA in association with National Federations shall be responsible for the preparation and delivery of teams that will participate in individual World University Championship events.  The selection of national university sports teams shall be in accordance with FISU Regulations as well as the USSA and SASCOC selection policies.

Official trials involving all possible students from that specific association, province or club, shall be held before a touring team is constituted. Trials for the selection of national teams to participate in the various World university championship and multi-sport events (Universiade, FASU and CUCSA Games), must be completed in time for USSA to meet all deadlines.  USSA Associations must submit their teams to the NEC of USSA for verification and approval. A tour takes place only when the selection committee, the NEC of USSA and the appropriate National Sports Federation find the standard in the specific sport sufficiently high for competing at international level, whether at development and/or elite levels.

The National University Sports Association (NUSA) concerned shall ensure the necessary liaison with the embassies involved, e.g. visas and customs regulations.  However, all forms of international liaison, including contact with FISU and Organising Committees of World University Championships must be done through the National Office of the USSA Secretariat.  The behaviour of tour members shall at all times be worthy of South Africa and their tertiary institutions so that they may be regarded as true ambassadors of South African student sport.
